Thanks to the initial impetus provided by Roger Zimmermann, the now-retired district forester, a wide-ranging enhancement project was launched in the Tugmatt-Rappenfluh-Röselen area. The area is situated where the cantons of Solothurn and Basel-Landschaft, and the four municipalities of Nuglar-St. Pantaleon, Gempen, Frenkendorf and Liestal, meet. It is an area of high biodiversity and, at the same time, offers great potential for promoting butterfly species, orchids, breeding birds and other species groups. The four local authorities and the largest forest owners have joined forces to launch a multi-year project based on the concept developed by Hintermann & Weber. The project’s measures are funded exclusively by the local authorities and donors. The cantonal specialist agencies are involved only on an informal basis. After five years, an interim review was conducted, which was attended by a broad representation of the project sponsors and donors. During a site visit in early June 2026, participants were given a good overview of the areas already enhanced and an insight into the measures still planned. The project will run for a further five years until the end of June 2031.
